The Individual: Chapter 02

The Limits of free will

We like to think we have more free will than we do. Most of the time we are following a script or program. Our bodies tell us when to drink, eat, and releave ourselves. Gut bateria determine what digests well, which affects what we like to eat. Family/peer/social pressure have a good amount of control on us. Economic factors play a large role in where and how we live.

Is everything in our lives pre-determined. No. There are moments, or cusps, where we face real decisions. But once those decisions are made, a significant about of what comes after is following the script.

It is also possible to break out, or go off the rails. Where one deliberately does something outside of normal. If one has the resources to support such a change the outcome may be good. Otherwise the outcome can range from bad to tragic.

Thus wealth enables more choices. Weath can enable more free-will choices. Whereas poverity reduces choices. Poor people are railroaded into just keeping things going.
