There are alternative places souls may end up.
If a soul is so entangled or attached to something in the physical world,
it is possible that the soul will not leave when it dies.
The soul could stay and haunt something in the physical world.
Or, a soul may be so disenchanted with the whole life-cycle that they avoid returning to the Ocean.
They may leave this world, but not return to the pool of Life.
They may seek solitude by heading off into the spiritual wilderness.
These souls will eventually fade away, unless they come back and re-enter the physical world.
Application: You have some control over what becomes of your soul.
In some belief systems, you soul is judged by some external entity.
Your soul is then taken to the place it was judged to be.
Once judged you do not have much say in how things go.
But in this system, the soul can and does have some ability to control its own destiny.
The intent of the soul can influence its trajectory. So be careful what you wish for.
