Sentience is more than just perceiving senses.
Raw perception is too hard to make sense out of in real time. It takes time to process and figure it out. And there can be conflicting perceptions that come in at the same time. The time taken to figure it out could be a matter of life or death.
Thus there needed to be a shortcut. some things needed to be responded to instantly. Thus a different kind of instinct was develoved. Kind of like muscle memory.
Thus a instant response was developed That did not need conscious thought. In fact it did not even reach the conscious mind. Sort of an auto-pilot.
