As senses and the automatic responses inproved eventually there were sensations beyond the necessary fight or flight responses. These were fed up to the consciousness.
But even this consciousness was having problems sorting it all out. Again it needed better ways of making sense of it all.
Thus as patterns in the perceptions or sensations were recognized They were built into pre-fab packages. packages that the mind could classify sensations into.
